Brief History:
San Luis known also at one time as Cabagsac has an expanding population of 35,589 in its seventeen barangays was founded in 1735 but set on fire by Captain Mariano Carlos on orders of General Luna in May, 1899. Its diligent people rebuilt their town from the ashes. Former Huk Supremo and Congressman Luis Taruc, and Kapampangan are local heroes from this township.
This town started as a settlement on the right bank of the Rio Grande of Pampanga. By its location, it serves as an ideal sanctuary of rebels and dissidents. Huk Supremo and Congressman Luis Taruc, HUK Chieftain Peregino Taruc and poet -writer Simeon Catacutan who wrote "Maulagang Mana" comes from this town.
San Luis is bounded on the north by Candaba and Sta. Ana, and on the east by the Pampanga River and the Candaba swamps. On the south lies San Simon and Baliwag, Bulacan, and the west is Minalin, Sto. Tomas, and San Simon. The town makes a safe and convenient hideout of dissidents, as well as an easy passageway into many directions.
The church of San Luis is a popular landmark in the province as it is one of the few Catholic churches in the country that has retained its architectural authenticity and aura of antiquity.
